How to whisk perfect matcha at home
A quiet ritual, in five minutes.
Matcha is more than a drink — it is a small pause in the day. Sifted, whisked, and slowly sipped, each bowl carries the concentrated flavour of shade-grown Uji leaves, stone-ground into a fine, jade-green powder.
What you'll need
- ~1 tsp (1,5 g) ceremonial-grade matcha
- 80 ml water at 70–80 °C — never boiling
- A bamboo whisk (chasen) and a wide, shallow bowl (chawan)
Preparation of whisk
To prepare a traditional bamboo matcha whisk (chasen), soak the tines in hot water for about 1 to 5 minutes before your first use, and for 30 seconds before later uses, to soften the delicate bristles and prevent them from breaking.
The whisking
Sift the matcha directly into the bowl to break up any clumps. Pour in the water, then whisk in a light, brisk W-motion — wrist only, not shoulder — for roughly fifteen seconds. Stop the moment a fine, uniform foam covers the surface.
The pause
Bring the bowl to eye level, take a slow breath, and drink in two or three sips. Rinse the whisk in warm water and stand it upright to dry. Repeat tomorrow.
